Greetings All,

For your consideration:
~
(No. 7569 ) Alger, Horatio, Jr. FROM CANAL BOY TO PRESIDENT, OR THE BOYHOOD
AND MANHOOD OF JAMES A. GARFIELD.
New York: John R. Anderson & Company, 1881. First edition, later state, Full
cloth, Sixteenmo, 334 pages + ads., Engraved plates. Near Fine.
When James Garfield was shot by Charles Guiteau in the summer of 1881
and finally died in late September, Horatio Alger sat down and wrote this
life of the president in three weeks. Garfield's life fit well with Alger's
rags-to-riches model. This later state has the errors corrected and no
errata sheet. Bound in brick-red cloth over boards with black and gilt
decoration. Tissue-guarded frontispiece portrait of 16 year old Garfield
facing an illustration of Garfield towing a canal boat. Prior owner embossed
monogram on front free endpaper. Another prior owner has inscribed his name
and date (1882) on preliminary blank leaf, with the following note:
"Garfield was shot on my fourteenth bearthday [sic] July 2, 1881". A few
extremity rubs and shallow bumps, binding sound, no hinge cracks. $50.00

omission alone would make a fairly good library out of a library that hadn't
a book in it.' - Mark Twain
