MACLEAN, John. /THE INDIANS Their Manners and Customs/. Bound in
publisher's original decorated cloth with gilt titling, and
black-&-white illustrations. William Briggs, Toronto. 1907. 4th edition,
hb cloth. Small 8vo, pp. 351.

/Inscribed, signed, and dated/ (Winnipeg, Nov. 19, 1918) by author on
front free endpaper, to John L. Spiers.

The decorated front board shows a stamped design of an Indian on
horseback (the horse pulling a travois), before a tipi beside which two
Indian women stand. Elaborate gilt lettering and design above. The
author's name is misspelled "McLean" on the front board. Maclean
(1851-1928) was a Methodist missionary who worked among the Blood
Indians near Fort MacLeod, Alberta, in the 1880s (Peel 1798). This title
was first published by Briggs in 1889, and was re-printed, during the
author's lifetime, three more times. Coles Publishing issued a cheap
facsimile in 1970, and it was also re-printed in 2000 by Laurier Books.
This is a fairly difficult book to find in the original edition,
especially a signed copy. The boards of this copy are a bit soiled and
stained to the front board, more so to the rear board; however the gilt
lettering and stamped design are untouched. There is light rubbing to
the tips. The contents are generally exceptionally clean and bright,
except for pp. 103-144, which appear, at one time, to have been folded
at the bottom margin. The hinges and joints are tight. Overall, still in
good plus to just less than very good condition.
