Galilei, Galileo. DIALOGO... SOPRA I DUE MASSIMI SISTEMI DEL MONDO,
TOLEMAICO, E COPERNICANO. Florence: G. B. Landini. 1632. Sm. 4to. (8),458,(34)pp. With
the original final blank leaf. Woodcut text diagrams. 17th century French
calf, gilt tooled spine. A very nice copy with the slip cancel on p. 92 verso, and
the leaf of errata, but lacking the added engraved title (not found in all
copies). A nice facsimile of the engraved title on handmade paper has been laid
in. Extremities of the binding are a bit rubbed, but the hinges are perfectly
sound. From the library of the French poet Antoine Coutel (1622-1693) with a
manuscript note by him at the end. Also with the 18th century bookplate of “
Jaillot, Geographe Ordinaire du Roi.” A tall, wide margined copy. Some occasional
text foxing, as often found. $27,500.00 (trade discount allowed)
The validity of the Copernican heliocentric theory over the Ptolemaic theory
