Greetings,

We are pleased to offer a Maine classic...

Sullivan, James. THE HISTORY OF THE DISTRICT OF MAINE...ILLUSTRATED BY
A NEW CORRECT MAP OF THE DISTRICT. Boston: Printed by I. Thomas and
E.T. Andrews. 1795. vii, 421 pp. Rebound in later (late 19th/early
20th century ?) 3/4 black leather over marbled boards. Marbled
pastedowns and endpapers. Spine with five raised bands and gilt
lettering. T.e.g. Edges and tips of boards worn. Private library
label and modern address label on front pastedown. Title a bit ragged
and with some stains. Occasional foxing and small stains throughout. A
well-cared-for example of an important Maine work.

This is the first comprehensive history of Maine and a cornerstone work
in any collection of Maine material. It includes Osgood Carleton's A
Map of the District of Maine Drawn from the latest Surveys and other
best Authorities by Osgood Carleton. The map, measuring 20 5/16 x 16
3/8", includes an inset titled "A Map of those parts of the Country most
famous for being harassed by the Indians." Carleton's map was the most
detailed done of Maine to that time. This example of the map has been
expertly repaired (including one long tear), laid down on linen and
rebound into the volume. Presumably the first owner's inscription on
back of title page: "The Property of Joshua Sprague 1795." Evans:
29589. Howes: S-1122. Sabin: 93499. Williamson: 9608. Thompson:
18A. For the map: Wheat & Brun: 171. McCorkle: Me795.1. [Item no.
2747.] $2,500.00.

Thanks for your consideration.
