History of English Literature, Four Volumes, Taine, H.A.; Translated from 
the French By H. Van Laun, Taine, H.A.; Translated from the French By H. Van 
Laun, Edinburg, n.d. circa 1870.
Taine analyzes historical periods and their societies, the development of 
nations, races, societies, philosophies, literatures, and arts, and the 
effects on the literary representatives of through History. He uses these 
collective influences to reflect the sources that drive great men of 
literature, using the various "Ages" and races. Exploring the periods from 
the Saxons through "modern -19th century" writings of  Dickens, Thackeray, 
Carlyle, Tennyson and Byron. Characterizing and comparing the philosophies, 
tastes, styles, religion, etc. of the day. Bound in 3/4 blue calf, with blue 
and gold marbled boards and end papers. Decorative gilt with title and 
volume number to spine, 5 raised bands. TEG, no writing very solidly bound 
with clean, clear text. Vol. I, 1/4 ding to upper board edge, scuffing to 
lower corner and upper rear corner edges, Vol. III, lower corner scuffed. 
Edges moderately rubbed. No date,  circa late 1870's. 8 vo. each 
approximately 400 pp. Beautifully bound, nice clean set. $145.00, digitals
