BANCROFT, George. HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES FROM THE DISCOVERY
OF THE AMERICAN CONTINENT. Boston: Little Brown 1866-1867. Nine
volumes uniformly bound in half polished red calf with calf corners
and marbled boards and endpapers with black leather author and title
spine labels and gilt spine decorations. Later editions of all,
without the tenth and last volume not published until 1874.
Illustrated with seven portraits and five maps. These nine volumes
begin with the discovery of the continent and end with the Revolution
in 1778. Though Bancroft's style was often turgid, his history was
far superior to anything previously published on the subject and is
still of great interest today. He "took the subject out of the hands
of mere annalists and commentators, and raised it to the dignity and
interest of philosophical narration" (Duyckinck, CYCLOPAEDIA OF
AMERICAN LITERATURE, p. 99). Howes B-88; New Howes B-84. Two labels
lacking, five others chipped. Some rubbing to joints and spines, but
covers very tight and contents very clean. A more than presentable
set of this important work. Very Good $350.00
