William Hough served with the 48th Regiment, Bengal Native Infantry, and
later became Deputy Judge Advocate General of the "Bengal Column, Army
of the Indus". After completion of this remarkable first-hand account,
he confined himself in the future to writing several works on military
law. This is Hough's account of the operations of the British Army
against the various tribes ofAfghanistan, during what is referred to as
the first "Afghan War", in order to secure the north-west frontier of
British India. It is both detailed and expansive. The large folding map
is titled "A Sketch Map of the States Bordering on the Indus River and
of Afghanistan shewing the Routes marched by the Army of the Indus
Composed of Troops from the Precidencies of Bengal and Bombay under the
personal command of His Excellency Lieutenant-General Sir John Keane,
Commander in Chief." It has a large closed tear (now repaired with
achival-quality tape) and the usual creasing and light foxing, but is
otherwise in quite nice condition. The three plates are foxed and show
the views as described in the subtitle. There is a half inch piece of
cloth missing from the spine bottom, and the joints are cracked. The
boards are bumped, and lightly scuffed & soiled. The hinges are cracked
and the binding is sprung. The contents are still reasonably tight and
are suprisingly clean and little foxed. A good copy of a very scarce title.
