Greetings All,

For your consideration:
~
(No. 7757 ) James, W[ill]. S.. COW-BOY LIFE IN TEXAS, OR 27 YEARS A
MAVRICK. A REALISTIC AND TRUE RECITAL OF WILD LIFE ON THE BOUNDLESS PLAINS
OF TEXAS, BEING THE ACTUAL EXPERIENCE OF TWENTY-SEVEN YEARS IN THE EXCITING
LIFE OF A GENUINE COW-BOY AMONG THE ROUGHS AND TOUGHS OF TEXAS.
Chicago: Donohue, Henneberry & Co., Publishers, (1893). First Edition, Full
cloth, Octavo, [iv], 9-213 pages, black & white photo frontispiece,
drawings. Very Good.
James, born in 1856, provides an important and accurate first hand
account of cattle ranching in Texas, including everything from the
performance of daily ranch tasks to frontier justice for bandits and cattle
rustlers. Illustrations include a frontispiece photograph of James with
facsimile signature plus 33 other full page illustrations throughout the
text. Ramon Adams, in "Rampaging Herd," notes 34 illustrations and says that
he has never seen a copy with the 50 illustrations claimed in the title.
Later editions seem to have 25 rather than 34 illustrations. The drawings
are signed variously "W.B.B.," "Parkhurst," and "Edw. Mason." See ADAMS,
HERD #1159; HOWES #J51; GRAFF #2194. Crudely printed on cheap paper which
has browned lightly throughout. A few scattered finger smudges in margins, a
short tear to the fore edge margin of a leaf here and there. Bound in
brick-red cloth with black stamped frontier scenes on upper board, ornaments
on spine. Hinges cracked, light rubs to extremities, but overall a handsome
copy this scarce book. $150.00
