CCCCCXLVII letters, many dealing with medical subjects. "Gui Patin is
unique in our annals. There is no one for comparison, Scores of
doctors have written letters; none save his remain as a permanent
contribution to literature... Successor of Riolan (fils) in the chair
of Medicine and dean of the Faculty in 1650 and '51, he contributed
little or nothing to the literature of the profession. He was a
brilliant lecturer and all Paris flocked 'a ses Theses comme a une
comedie'....He was a devoted booklover and collected a library of ten
thousand volumes....The letters were written to intimate friends...
[and] are his life -a journal intime, from which ones learns to
forgive the bitter hater and the obstructionist, and to love the man
for his spirit, his books and his friends," William Osler,
Bibliotheca Osleriana.
Books plates of Hector de Backer, former president of the Societe des
Bibliophiles et Iconophiles de Belgique, whose library was auctioned
in 1926 and Johann Joseph Freyherr v. Griset...
Vellum with scattered soiling, owner's bookplates, small rubber stamp
mark to free endpaper of volume one, and title page of volume two, a
few preliminary leaves with faint foxing, otherwise quite clean,
leaves crisp and firmly bound; a very good or better set of this
classic in an early but much enlarged edition. [26113] $300
