Benjamin, Edward H. [et al]. CALIFORNIA MINES AND MINERALS.

San Francisco; California Miners' Association: 1899.

"Published...for the California Meeting of the American Institute of Mining
Engineers." This wonderful survey includes massive amount of information
on California minerals, ores, mines and mining at the end of the 19th century.

Benjamin complains in the Foreword that although he was promised articles
from many sources, far fewer actually wrote anything for this project. The
articles that were written and published here include-

The Mining Industry of California, by Charles Yale; The Mother Lode of
California, by Ross Browne; Notes on Dredging for Gold, by R.H.
Postlethwaite; Fineness of California Gold, by Frank Leach; Petroleum in
California, by W.L. Watts; The Copper Resources of California, by M.M.
O'Shaughnessy; The California Miners' Association, by J.H. Neff;
Quicksilver in California; and chapters on mining and minerals in Nevada,
Butte, Placer, El Dorado, Calaveras, Tuolumne, Mariposa, Plumas, Sierra,
Yuba, Alameda, Fresno, and Madera Counties. The illustrations include many
photographs of mines and miners.

Hardcover. 6.5"x9", 450 pages with many b/w illustrations, 2 folding charts
and 3 folding maps; plus 48 pages of advertisements for mining-related
equipment and industries, most of it California-based. Bound in old
pebbled cloth with a plain leather spine and tips, with moderate wear and
rubbing; also moderate water stains to the lower portion of the covers.
Internally there is a light to moderate water ripple, and a bit of
staining, along the bottom edge, especially in the first 50 or so pages.
Some very minor adhesions at the very edges of some of the pages, not
affecting any text or images. A working copy, but a pretty good one, with
tight hinges and otherwise clean. [07786]
