Andrews, William Loring. THE HEAVENLY JERUSALEM. A Mediaeval Song of the
Joys of the Church Triumphant, with annotations by William Loring Andrews.
New York; Charles Scribner's Sons: 1908.
Printed at The Gilliss Press in an edition
of 120 copies on Arches hand-made paper.
In part a reprinting of William Prime's 1865 pamphlet on the Mediaeval hymn
"Heavenly Jerusalem", in part a discussion of Andrews' study of this book
and the even scarcer volume on the subject by the Rev. Horatius Bonar. This
volume is beautifully printed in red and black with decorative initial
letters in red and blue. A beautiful book, whether you want it as a
bibliographical study or an example of fine printing.
Card covers. 6"x9", xviii + 78 pages; the illustrations consist of a
photogravure reproduction of a 1619 title page; two engraved pages,
including the title page for this volume, designed and engraved by Sidney
L. Smith; a photogravure reproduction of a 15th century ms. leaf printed in
brown and red with silver and blue highlighting; b/w illustrations of a
woodcut and a hymnal page. Gilt-stamped paper covers over cards; a very
nice, clean copy with the exception of the spine which is clean but has
been torn and re-glued in several places; in the process the spine letters
"Jeru" have been obscured; there are slight cracks along the outer
hinges. [07784]
