EDITION [Vol. 1:] Printed for the Author by Heywood, n.d.; WITH [Vol. 2:]

The First Volume notes Second Edition. The Second volume which is without
this rubric, is the FIRST BOOK EDITION OF THE SECOND VOLUME. The first
volume, with every signature has a roman numeral in both issues which reach
the total of 18. The book was originally issued in 18 parts. This is the
famous and often reprinted autobiography of the poet-weaver-radical Samuel
Bamford (1788-1872) who agitated for the repeal of the Corn Laws in England
for which he was imprisoned in 1819. He was active in reform agitation for
"Manhood Suffrage," the right of all to vote, through the early 1820s and
was imprisoned for as long as a year for his involvement in riots. The
riots were all started by the police and not by the peaceful
demonstrators. Bamford's voice is unusually literate, well read and
describes events in detail and temperately. As a proletarian intellectual,
he was a very unusual for his pre-Marxist times. His book has a unique
perspective and tells its story with panache. The memoirs include profiles
of political leaders, the suspension of Habeas Corpus in 1817, government
spies and informers, participation of women in the reform movement, William
Cobbett, trade clubs of London, etc. Three volumes , small 8vo, pp 291,
291, 256, with 2 line errata on page 291 of volume 1, in both copies,
comprising the very rare first book printing of the first volume of
Bamford's autobiography, which was issued in 18 parts in 1840, together
with the Second edition of the same which accompanies the first book
printing of volume 2, i.e. as a two volume set. The first of volume one
does not have volume number on the spine, and has a 2 line errata, where
the third edition has a 3 line errata. These were both preceded by parts
issues in wrappers. These editions are extremely rare. No parts issues,
appear in COPAC or OCLC. Between them both they do note 2 copies of the
Second book appearance of Volume I, in one case bound with the First book
appearance of Volume II. Burnett, Vincent & Mayall, The Autobiog. of the
