[CLEVELAND, Frances Folsom] KELLER, Helen. HELEN KELLER. SOUVENIR
OF THE FIRST SUMMER MEETING...TO PROMOTE THE TEACHING OF SPEECH TO
THE DEAF Inscribed to Mrs. Grover Cleveland. Washington, D.C.: Volta Bureau
1892. Second Edition. Folio (10-3/4" x 13-1/2") in printed
string-tied white wraps. Illustrated with a portrait frontispiece of
Keller and facsimiles of two of her letters. Includes contributions
by Keller, Alexander Graham Bell, Annie Sullivan, and others, much
expanded from the First Edition. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the
twelve-year old Keller on the front free endpaper in pencil, as
Keller always used, to Frances Cleveland, the wife of President
Grover Cleveland: "To Mrs. Cleveland -- From the little girl/who sees
with her soul/Helen Keller/Tuscumbia, Alabama/November Fourth 1892."
Certainly one of the finest and earliest inscriptions by Keller in
existence, with the added value of the association and date of the
inscription, only four days before Cleveland was elected to his
second term. Cleveland was the only President married in the White
House, to Frances in June 1886, whom he met when he was 27 and she
was an infant. After her father's death when she was 11, Cleveland
became administer of his estate, and when Frances graduated from
college he proposed to her. Front cover detached but present. First
text page with a clean tear with no loss. Heavy chipping to rear
cover with loss and slightly less to rear blank pages and to one
facsimile page. Stain in outer right margin increasing in size toward
the end. Fair copy but with a superb inscription! $5000.00
