Quarto, original light brown cloth covers backed with cream cloth, 
edge-rubbed, spine darkened and chipped at the extremities, name crossed 
out at top of title page, top edge gilt, other edges uncut.  Inscribed to 
George F. C. Smillie "from his partner in distress, George Iles," 
Washington, 1917.  (Smillie was a prominent engraver who executed 
portraits, &c, on U.S. currency, postage stamps, &c, as well as the silver 
certificates of 1895 and WWI posters; Iles was a prolific author - see Who 
Was Who. The book would have been of special interest to Smillie as it 
contains several plates with multiple engravings by Durand of bank note 
vignettes.)  15 plates as listed plus an extra plate.  (Durand, a leading 
engraver & artist, 1796-1886, "was identified with every contemporary 
movement  to foster American arts"  - DAB).    $190.00
