ILLUSTRATED CATALOGUE OF ART TILES MADE BY J. and J.G. LOW, CHELSEA MASS.
U.S.A.

C.A. Wellington & Co.: 1882.

John Low, an artist by trade, was so impressed with the tiles shown at the
Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876 that he started his own tile
company in Chelsea, Massachusetts. By May, 1879 the first kiln-load was
completed and shortly after that Wellington & Burrage of Boston contracted
to be the sole distributors of Low Art Tiles.

By 1880 the tiles had won a gold medal in England and soon Low's art tiles
were winning international awards and competing head-to-head with the major
English tile firms. This large trade catalog was the first Low Art Tile
catalog, and its photographs feature both Low's name as well as Wellington
& Burrage (although the catalog was actually issued by C.A. Wellington &
Co., Mr. Burrage having retired between the time the photos were taken and
the time the catalog was issued). In addition, there are three plates
illustrating Wellington's decorative fireplace accessories.

A very attractive and important trade catalog. Card covers. 11"x14", 7
pages of text with 3 b/w illustrations, plus 16 b/w and tinted heliotype
plates, some with tissue guards. Some soil, front cover slightly creased
and with a very minor split, general wear. [07385] $1,500.00
