Life and times of Washington: Containing a Particular Account of National 
Principles and Events, and of the Illustrious Men of the Revolution, 
Illustrated By Alonzo Chappel, Volume II, John Frederick Schoeder, 
Illustrated by Alonzo Chappel, Johnson, Fry and Company, New York, circa 
1857, Full Leather: Volume II only, full leather ornately tooled boards, 
ridged spine, elaborate gilt title to front board, gilt to spine. All edges 
gilt. Mild rubbing, few darkened areas.  End papers replaced, evidence that 
spine has been reinforced. Front board mildly warped. Tightly bound. Begins 
with Monmouth the Campaign of 1778; the army including detachments at 
different places, was found to amount to only 15,000.  At Valley Forge, 
Washington had,8000. The British Army at this time numbered 33,000. Through 
to Washington's last illness and death. Full page steel engravings, from 
original designs of historical scenes and full length portraits. Dr. 
Schroeder, born in 1800, Maryland, was a clergyman, member of the New 
England Historian society, wrote " Maxims of Washington," and several other 
works, edited and contributed to works of theology and Christian literature. 
A very well researched historical volume. Appendix and index to rear. 
Previous owners name neatly scripted to upper margin of title page. Mild

Edition: Biographies of five great theologists and men of great faith; who 
came from Puritan roots; and whose lectures, writings and ministries had 
great and lasting impact on Christianity. A portrait of each man. Jonathan 
Edwards, 1703 (b), Connecticut, philosopher, revivalist and theologian. 
Edwards' writings determined the American debates over religious psychology, 
moral agency, and social ethics. John Wesley (1703-1791) B. England; 
Anglican clergyman, evangelist, and cofounder of Methodism.  William Ellery 
Channing - (b) Newport, Rhode Island, 1780-1842; Minister, Boston, spokesman 
for Unitarian controversy. His Christian humanism inspired many followers of 
the Transcendentalist movement; Horace Bushnell (b) 1802- 1876, Bantam, 
Conn. A Congregational Minister and controversial theologian, father of 
American religious liberalism; Phillips Brooks, 1835-1893, Boston, American 
Episcopal Bishop, Trinity Church. On of the most influential ministers of 
the 1800's, famous for his lectures. Four pages of ads to rear.  Maroon 
cloth spine and boards, faded gilt title to spine. Mild wear, few fade spots 
to lower edge, rear 3 1/2 inch long thin bubble to cloth. Precious owners

McCosh, G.P. Putnam's Sons, N.Y., 1888, First American Edition: From a 
series of Lectures on Christian Theology,  produced by the endowment to The 
Theological Seminary of the Diocese of Ohio and Kenyon College. James 
McCosh, President of Princeton College presents his lecture of evolution 
based on naturalistic and scientific evidence. Brown cloth boards and spine, 
faded gilt to spine. Spine ends chipped rubbed with mild fraying. Upper and 
side edge of front board mildly soiled with fade marks. Rear f.e.p. evidence 
of erased pencil marks.  sm 8vo, 109 pp. All else clean and tightly bound.

Works of Rev. Leonidas L. Hamline, Hibbard, Rev. F.G., Editor, Hitchcock and 
Walden, Cincinnati, 1869, First Edition: best known as a Methodist editor 
and promoter of holiness. Elected a bishop at the 1844 General Conference, 
he took a leading role in the debate over the case of Bishop James Andrew 
which led to the North-South schism of American Methodism. Hamline 
experienced "entire sanctification" in 1842 and promoted the experience and 
the doctrine the rest of his life. Frontispiece, portrait engraving of 
Bishop Hamline, foxed to marginal areas, tissue covering heavily foxed. Text 
very clean, tightly bound. Brown cloth boards and spine, decorative gilt 
border to spine ends, decorative gilt title panel to spine. Spine ends few
