Only, 1898. lxxi, 206 pp. + adv. 8vo. Parchment covered boards, gilt
titles, and gilt and red stamped decorations; top edge gilt
(hardback). First English Language edition. No. 455 of an unknown
number of copies. Bookplate of the artist and collector Pickford
Waller most probably by Austin Osman Spare. Spine sunned, parchment
mottled, minor foxing on endpapers, binding tight, leaves crisp and
clean; a very good copy. [26660] $150.00

[1 pp]. 8vo. Parchment covered boards, gilt titles, gilt and green
stamped decorations; fore and bottom edges deckled, top edge gilt
(hardback). Definitive edition. Publisher's erratum tipped in on
contents page Vol I. No. 6 of an unknown number of copies. This is
the octavo edition; there is also a large paper edition. Vol I:
Narrative Poems; Vol II: London City Poems, Sonnets, Lyrics and
Translations. Very good copies, boards and spine rubbed, mainly on
volume II, minor foxing mostly to endpapers, leaves crisp and bright.

John Payne (1842-1916) English poet and translator, though much
praised for his poetry by his contemporaries such as Matthew Arnold
and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, is perhaps better known for his
translations.
