We offer for Sale:
Fludger, John (Fludyer). A CORRECT AND FAMILIAR EXPOSITION ON THE
COMMON-PRAYER-BOOK OF THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND COLLECTED FROM THE WORKS
OF BISHOP SPARROW, BISHOP ANDREWS, BISHOP PEARSON, BISHOP BEVERIDGE
... [ET AL.] ... THE WHOLE COMPILED BY DIVINES OF THE CHURCH OF
ENGLAND. TO WHICH IS PREFIX'D A PREFACE, CONTAINING SOME REFLECTIONS
ON THE DEISTICAL, ARIAN, AND SOCINIAN NOTIONS CONCERNING THE OBJECT
OF WORSHIP; DISPLAYING THE NATURE OF PRAYER, AND EXPEDIENCY OF FORMS;
AND VINDICATING THE SERVICE OF OUR CHURCH FROM THE POPULAR OBJECTIONS
MADE AGAINST IT. London: Printed for the Compilers by Thomas Gardner,
1739. Engraved frontis, xvi, 1140 pp. Folio (36 cm). Blue cloth.
Second edition. A first edition, without the author's name, was
published on 1735.
John Fludger or Fludyer (1712-73), he preferred the former, was a
contemporary of Johnson at Pembroke, of whom Johnson later held a low
opinion, calling him a "violent whig" and a low-church clergyman
(Boswell, Life, II, p.444), though the Exposition is clearly aimed at
the orthodox High Church with its attacks on "Deistical, Arian, and
Socinian Notions concerning the Object of Worship" as well as its
support of the Athanasian Creed. Scarce, OCLC, RLIN and BL show only
3 copies of each edition.
Institutional bookplate noting the book was a gift of Michael J.
O'Farrell, the first Bishop of the Diocese of Trenton, on the front
pastedown with his bookplate on the first blank. Rebound nicely in
blue cloth, accession numbers on spine, front blank and last leaf
ragged at the edges, small tear to margins of b2 and x3, soiling to
the edges, scattered foxing, some offsetting, and occasional light
dampstain at the top or front edge, binding solid, leaves clean, a
very good copy. [26674] $475
