We offer for Sale:
Church of England. THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER AND ADMINISTRATION OF
THE SACRAMENTS & OTHER RITES & CEREMONIES OF THE CHURCH ACCORDING TO
THE USE OF THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND: TOGETHER WITH THE PSALTER OR PSALMS
OF DAVID, POINTED AS THEY ARE TO BE SUNG OR SAID IN THE CHURCHES, AND
THE FORM AND MANNER OF MAKING, ORDAINING, AND CONSECRATING OF
BISHOPS, PRIESTS, AND DEACONS. London: William Pickering, 1844. [ca
622]. Folio (35x26 cm). Full calf with blind rules and ornamentation,
morocco spine label with gilt title, blind embossed decorations to
compartments, raised bands, marbled endpapers, all edges red. First
thus. Benton 91; Keynes p.86.
One of the nine editions of the Book of Common Prayer that William
Pickering (1796-1854) produced with Charles Whittingham, and
containing his most famous title page. Printed in black and red in
Gothic lettter, rubricated throughout and with ornaments in imitation
of early editions on Pouncy's handmade paper, decorated with the
splendid wood engravings by Mary Byfield, after designs by J. A.
Montagu (according to Warren, though a recent exhibit at UNT suggests
Byfield may have also designed them). "The form and manner of making,
ordaining, and consecrating of bishops ..." section has a special
title page.
Very good+, boards rubbed with some spider web crackling, wear at the
front edge and lower corner with some loss, occasional light spotting
and foxing, binding tight, leaves fresh and clean. A handsome copy.
