SHAW, George Bernard. TYPED MANUSCRIPT (TM): THE DARK LADY OF THE
SONNETS. Shaw's Own Copy of a Radio Broadcast. 22 April 1938. A
5-page typed manuscript, Shaw's own retained carbon copy, with
several words crossed out on the last page and four words added in
his hand. This broadcast talk was given as a prologue to a B.B.C.
performance of Shaw's play THE DARK LADY OF THE SONNETS. In addition
to introducing the play, the piece is an argument for the building of
a National Theatre on the banks of the Thames. This was eventually
accomplished but not until 1976. This item was last sold as lot 248
in the Parke-Bernet auction of 23 February 1954. It was then
described as Shaw's first broadcast over the B.B.C., but Shaw had
read one of his plays for the B.B.C. in 1924 and had given a number
of talks after that date. The five pages are tipped to quarto-sized
pages bound together without covers and inserted in a folder of
marbled boards with a cloth spine. Though there is no indication of
such, this is from the collection of Harold Ackert. Fine in a
cloth-backed marbled board folder. $1500.00
