CALDWELL, Erskine. TOBACCO ROAD. New York: Scribner 1932. First
Edition. Caldwell's sensational novel explores the lives of the poor
and degenerate Lester family of Georgia's cotton region. Made into a
very successful play in 1933 and a much less successful and rather
bowdlerized film in 1941, it is the work with which Caldwell is most
identified. This is Clifford Waller Barrett's copy with his bookplate
tipped to the front free endpaper. Barrett's collection of American
Literature at the University of Virginia is one of the finest in the
world. An old Hartford bookseller's small ticket on the rear
pastedown. Very slightly cocked but a tight, bright copy in a
well-preserved dustwrapper with mild sunning to the spine which has a
fingernail-sized chip at the upper right corner affecting the right
half of the letter "o" in "Tobacco" and just extending to the front
panel which has a tiny closed tear at the bottom. Near Fine in bright,
Near Fine dustwrapper. $1500.00
