Hennepin, Father Louis. A NEW DISCOVERY OF A VAST COUNTRY IN
AMERICA. Chicago; A.C. McClurg & Co.: 1903. "Reprinted from the second
London issue of 1698". Edited by Reuben Gold Thwaites. A very important
and ultimately controversial 17th century travelogue. Hennepin set out with
LaSalle to explore the Mississippi, and, after LaSalle turned back to raise
more money, Hennepin sailed up the river and explored further into the
Northwest interior than any European before him, even managing to be held
captive by the Sioux for a while. The troubles began when Hennepin also
claimed to have followed the Mississippi south to the Gulf of Mexico...
when in fact he never did such a thing. He has also been criticized for
plagiarizing passages from other authors. Despite these faults, this
remains an important work. Hardcover. 2 volumes. 6"x8.5", lxiv + 711
pages; several b/w plates and 2 folding maps; light cover soil, front hinge
cracked and a bit loose; ownership stamp of "Eugene d'Aumont-Cote de St.
Lusson" and blindstamp of "Eugene Cote -Police Justice"; spine heads
slightly pulled and one slightly torn and apparently neatly reglued.
