[ROOSEVELT, Eleanor] GELLHORN, Martha. THE TROUBLE I'VE SEEN. New
York: William Morrow & Company 1936. Second Printing of the author's
second book, a collection of short stories. Introduction by H. G.
Wells. ELEANOR ROOSEVELT'S COPY INSCRIBED and SIGNED to her by the
author on the front endpaper: "For/Mrs. Roosevelt/with gratitude and
devotion./Martha Gellhorn." Gellhorn, the third wife of Ernest
Hemingway and the only one to leave him, was an accomplished fiction
writer but was best known for her groundbreaking journalism as a war
correspondent. The London Daily Telegraph hailed Gellhorn as "one of
the great war correspondents of the century; brave, fierce and wholly
committed to the truth of the situation." This book is a report in
the form of four short stories on the Relief program in industrial
areas, a result of Gellhorn's hiring by Harry Hopkins, director of
the Federal Emergency Relief Administration. Through her work on this
book, she met the President and Eleanor Roosevelt, who became her
lifelong friend. About Very Good, lacking the dustwrapper. $1000.00
