There is an interesting passage in the preface to Julia Torrey's 1917 book
"Old Sheffield Plate". Writing at the height of World War I, Torrey feels
the need to explain her decision to publish a book on a subject as
'frivolous' as collecting-
"The spirit of destruction is rampant, and is eating its way into our lives
whether we will it or no. Our best energies are spent in the creation of
huge and elaborate mechanisms for the sole purpose of destroying and of

courtesies to institutions and the trade; Postage charges are $5.00 for the

will be billed at cost. We accept returns if we are notified within ten

terms. Massachusetts residents must add 5% state sales tax.
