Both a history of the rise and fall of the art of miniatures portraits on 
ivory in France and England, and a thorough examination of the techniques 
used to paint them.

Hardcover. 6.5"x10", xi + 158 pages, plus 16 gravure plates with tissue 
guards; original softcovers bound into beautiful full red leather with 
raised bands and elaborate giltwork on the spine and covers; silked 
endpapers, and gilt dentelles. Binding signed "S.Simon Rel." Endpapers with 
several tears, covers with some rubbing and a little cracking at the 
joints, etc. A presentation copy, inscribed by the author to George Jay 
Gould, and with Gould's "Georgian Court" bookplate. Gould was the son of 
the railroad magnate Jay Gould, and built the grand estate 'Georgian Court' 
in Lakewood, New Jersey, in 1896. [08171] $300.00
