"LATEST NEWS: San Francisco, April 19, 11:45 a. m. -- All hope of
saving any portion of San Francisco has fled and the most sanguine
are now of the opinion that the city will be wiped off the earth."
So begins a local newspaper's account relating the fate of the city
that had just suffered the effects of what was to eventually be known
as the most powerful earthquake ever to strike modern civilization.
Despite the extensive devastation wrought by Mother Nature, recovery
did come, & today we are able to thank God those pundits were proven
very wrong.
