Scarcely known today, Cary (1888-1957), an Irishman who lived in Oxford, has been critically acclaimed as one of the finest writers in the English language during the early 20th century. His Nigerian experiences in WWI led to his greatest novel--here as Mr. Johnson. American Visitor was his 2nd novel, African Witch his 3rd. This lot blends early with later material and should give the reader a clear idea why Cary is regarded so highly.
