[Rarebooks] FS: 1758 Moravians and Indians with 16 folding plates

DOUCE,  OU  LE TOUT EST REPRESENTE AU NATUREL.  Small octavo (4-1/2" x
7")  bound  in very early marbled boards with a gilt red spine  label:
[2],  3-87, [1], 16 folding plates. First Edition in French, published
one  year  after  the First German Edition and usually  attributed  to
David  Crantz,  this  history  of the  Moravian  United  Brethren  was
published  not long after their establishment in America. The  sixteen
folding  plates  illustrate various customs and rites of the  Moravian
missionaries  including  an exorcism in the West Indies;  baptisms  in
the  West  Indies, Greenland, and America (Native Americans); and  the
Kiss  of  Peace  with  men on one side of the room and  women  on  the
other.  Sabin 7935.  This book was published at an early  and  crucial
point  in  the history of the Moravian Church in America when  it  was
under  attack, along with its Indian converts, for treason during  the
French and Indian War. Title page slightly trimmed along right border;
minor  tears  in margins of some plates. Mild chipping to  spine  tips
but  binding  and contents firm. Near Fine example of a scarce  title.
