THE PACIFIC COAST. BEING A NARRATIVE OF THE BURNING OF THE SHIPS NONANTUM,
HUMAYOON AND FANCHON, TOGETHER WITH MANY STARTLING AND INTERESTING
ADVENTURES ON SEA AND LAND.
Boston: James French and Company, 1857. First printing, Original cloth,
Octavo, 336 pages, 3 black & white plates. Good.
The author was the wife of the captain of the Nonantum of Boston,
which sailed for San Francisco from Baltimore in 1850 with provisions for
the gold fields. The cargo of coal was loaded damp and spontaneously
combusted during the voyage. The smoldering ship was able to reach the
Falklands where it had to be sold for scrap. So begin the adventures of Mrs.
Bates. SABIN #3923. Bound in drab green cloth over boards with gilt
lettering and ornament on spine, border rules and ornaments stamped in gilt
and blind on upper board, blind only on lower board. Prior owner name
lightly pencilled on preliminary blank. Some shallow fraying to spine ends,
corner tips rubbed, scattered foxing inside. Hinges not cracked but some
signatures beginning to pull. $75.00
