From our annual End of Summer Miscellany Catalogue to be posted on our home
page tomorrow. It will contain 140 items, many quite scarce, including
interesting Autographs, scarce Americana titles, unusual Baseball and other
Sporting items, and uncommon Modern First Editions, such as this:
CHANDLER, Raymond. THE LONG GOODBYE. Boston: Houghton Mifflin
Company 1954. First Edition. The First American Edition, preceded by
the English edition in 1953. The sixth volume in the Philip Marlowe
series and Chandler's last book, made into a film by Robert Altman
starring Elliott Gould as Marlowe and with an uncredited appearance
as a hood by Arnold Schwarzenegger. One of Chandler's finest
novels--many believe it to be a milestone of detective fiction--it
jumps to life with its very first sentence: "The first time I laid
eyes on Terry Lennox he was drunk in a Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith
outside the terrace of The Dancers." Spotting to the spine cloth,
apparently fairly typical for this title and not extending to the
covers, in a complete dustwrapper with mild edgewear. Still Near Fine
in a Near Fine dustwrapper. Sharp copy! $1250.00
