“Report upon the Third International Geographical Congress and Exhibition
at Venice, Italy, 1881, accompanied by data concerning the principal
government land and marine surveys of the world”

By Captain George Wheeler, Corps of Engineers, U.S. Army. Published by the
Washington Government Printing Office: 1885.

In 1881, Captain George Wheeler, a pioneering explorer and cartographer,
and leader of one of the major nineteenth century surveys of the western
United States, was chosen to serve as the U.S. delegate to the Third
International Geographical Congress in Venice. “Report upon the Third
International Geographical Congress
” is Wheeler’s report, published in
quarto for the use of Congress and the Department of War.

The first section of the report details the various resolutions of the
Geographical Congress and includes the text of resolution No. 19
concerning the establishment of a common initial meridian at Greenwich,
England and uniform standard time. Following sections of the report
describe: the exhibitions, the government land and marine surveys of the
other countries attending, a reference bibliography, a discussion of
methods of reproduction, and remarks, consisting of extracts from various
reports.

The discussion of methods of reproduction is particularly fascinating as
it not only debates the pros and cons of heliogravure, photozincography
and chromolithography (Process Eckstein), but it also gives exacting step
by step instructions on the processes including paper content, plate
preparation, chemicals used and a list of which countries use what
processes. The discussion is quite detailed, including remarks on the
types of stones that are best for maps, and their preparation- if you want
to know how a 19th century map printer worked, this is the book that will
tell you all the fascinating details!
