BENJAMIN FRANKLIN; Philadelphia, 20 January 1786. 1 p. Folio, partly
printed document; Signed. American Philosophical Society membership
certificate partially filled in with manuscript for the "Reverend Mr.
Henry Muhlenberg of Lancaster," SIGNED by Franklin, as President of the
Society, (the top signature at the lower right). Also signed by 7
additional members of this internationally esteemed group of men and
women of science and ideas.
"Mr. Henry Muhlenberg of Lancaster" was born Gotthilf Heinrich Ernst
Muhlenberg (1753-1815), the son of Reverend Heinrich Melchior
Muhlenberg, Sr., the noted patriarch of Luthrenism in America. Henry was
a noted botanist and the first President of Franklin College, (now
Franklin & Marshall College). Other signatures, members of the APS,
include John Ewing, William White, John Foulke, James Hutchinson, Sam
Morgan, James Vaughn, and R. Patterson. Signatures strong and dark. With
blue silk ribbon and white paper seal stamped in blind, at the bottom
center, between the two columns of signatures. Old stain at base of
matting, and paper lightly toned, otherwise a very good example of this
scarce and interesting document. Framed. $10,500
