WHITTOCK, NATHANIEL: THE DECORATIVE PAINTERS' AND GLAZIERS' GUIDE: 
containing the most approved methods of imitating oak, mahogany, 
maple, rose, cedar, coral, and every other kind of fancy wood; verd 
antique, dove, sienna, porphyry, white veined, and other marbles; in 
oil or distemper colour: designs for decorating apartments, in 
accordance with the various styles of architecture; with directions 
for stenciling, and process for destroying damp in walls; also a 
complete body of information on the art of staining and painting on 
glass; plans for the erection of apparatus for annealing it; and the 
method of joining figures together by leading, with examples from 
ancient windows / by Nathaniel Whittock ; assisted by the most 
experienced practical artizans in every department of decorative

74 (i.e. 85) leaves of plates (some col.) ; 28 cm.[4to]. The scarcest 
of Whittock's manuals. It is also the most interesting in its 
inclusion of several dozen hand colored lithographed plates of faux 
marbling, woods, Porphyry, and designs in color for stained glass 
windows, heraldry. Included in Abbey[copy now at Yale]. OCLC, 5 Locs. 
in the US:[PUL, YUS, SC Bor. Sem., U. Del., Smith Col.] but only 2 in 
the UK. [BL, VA].* This copy shows some foxing and just a touch of 
water to the front margins of a few plates. But a Very Good copy. 
Original full calf, gilt Dec. and blind stamped ruled lines, gilt 
complex Dec. corner foliation. Spine with 4 false raised bands, Gilt 
geometric Dec., Gilt title, marbled EPs. Several inscriptions :This 
book was given me by my father Longley Allgood October 26, 1846 Henry 
Allgood. With note of his marriage and 2 children. A bookplate has 
been removed, OW a very good copy in original black calf, triple 
ruled gilt lines at edges of boards and an inner box with the same, 
but with large complex foliate corners. Spine with 5 false raised 
bands, 4 boxes with triple ruled lines and foliate corners 
surrounding a quatrefoil, the last box titled. Gilt in title 
partially lost, OW a VG binding. Text $1500.00

*OCLC lists 10, but upon inspection, one by one, five of them are 
later editions from 1827 to 1841.
