KYOKA, Izumi THE TALE OF THE WANDERING MONK
Limited Editions Club New York 1995. Folio (14" x 17") bound in a lush violet
Japanese book-binding cloth. First Edition in English of this mystical
masterpiece by the supreme romanticist of the Meiji period (1868-1912) which
coincided with Japan's emergence from a feudal society. The "pouch binding"--or
Fukuro toji--is the traditional Japanese with pages securely "bound" across an
open spine with thread in a pattern that suggests a delicate Japanese screen and
with the traditional title strip on the cover. The format has been modified so
that the spine is on the left, Western style, rather than the right.
Illustrated with four paintings by Setsuko Ideta, wife of Balthus, that were
converted into wood blocks by Keiji Shinohara in his California studio. These
were then aligned and overlaid to print the images on hand-made Japanese
mulberry paper. Copy #78 of 300 numbered copies SIGNED by Setsuko. Monthly
Letter laid in. Fine in slipcase. $2000.00
