575, with numerous black-and-white illustrations throughout by Dan Beard.
     
This is the first state issue of the first American edition, with the 
small "S" between the words "The King" on page 59. Blank half-title 
page. Broken type on page 72. Title on front board and spine shown as "A 
Yankee in King Arthur's Court". Two page publisher's advertisement at 
end of book.First published in England December 6, 1889 by Chatto & 
Windus, in Canada by G. M. Rose & Sons on December 8, and in the U.S. on 
December 10 by Charles L. Webster & Company. BAL 3429. Interesting 
postage-stamp sized label at bottom right corner of rear free endpaper 
issued by the Publishers' & Booksellers' Protective Association of New 
York. Early printed label of Fred. Everett Bissell affixed diagonally on 
the front pastedown. The spine ends and boards edges are rubbed, and the 
tips of the boards a bit bumped. The rear board shows light scuffing, 
with light rubbing to the joints. The decorated front board is a trifle 
scuffed, but the design and lettering and bright and virtually unmarked. 
The hinges are tight and the endpapers are intact, showing only a few 
spots of foxing. The text block is cracking a bit between pages 224 to 
225, but no pages, or signatures, are loose, and the book feels nice and 
tight. Typical age-toning to margins, but the text is clean and 
unmarked. A better-than-average copy in good plus condition. We also 
have available a copy of the first Canadian edition.
