*CONRAD, Joseph. /THE SHADOW LINE A Confession/*. Bound in original blue
cloth blocked and lettered in gilt. Doubleday, Page & Company, New York
City. 1917. 8vo, pp. 197.

"The 'shadow line' is that dim boundary that divides youth from manhood.
How a young first mate, who unexpectedly finds himself in command of a
sailing vessel, leaves his carefree youth behind forever in the
agonizing responsibility of a twenty-one day voyage from Bangkok to
Singapore. His ship is becalmed, the whole crew stricken with fever and
no quinine in the medicine chest! A tale which shows Mr. Conrad's gifts
at their highest level." This is the first American edition. The first
British edition was published by Dent in the same year. Spine ends
slightly crinkled, slightest wear to tips of boards. Early former
owner's signature on front free endpaper. Binding slightly cracked
towards centre, but hinges tight, and nothing loose. Overall, a very
good copy. The original dust jacket is chipped across the top and at the
folds. It was originally gunmetal blue in colour, but the panels and
spine have faded, leaving only the flaps in their original state. Light
general soiling. Still in good condition.
