35 ITEMS BY AND ABOUT DANIEL WEBSTER
Part I: (Nos. 1-18).
1. Webster, Daniel. SPEECH OF THE HON. DANIEL WEBSTER, DELIVERED TO
THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE UNITED STATES, ON THE 14TH
JANUARY, 1814, ON A BILL MAKING FURTHER PROVISIONS FOR FILLING THE
RANKS OF THE REGULAR ARMY, ENCOURAGING ENLISTMENTS, AND AUTHORISING
THE ENLISTMENTS FOR LONGER PERIODS OF MEN WHOSE TERMS OF SERVICE ARE
ABOUT TO EXPIRE. Alexandria: Printed by Snowden & Simms, 1814. 13 pp.
8vo. Printed self wrappers. First edition. One of four different
printings the same year. The first important speech by Webster in the
House of Representatives (to which he was elected the prior year). He
used his objection to the bill, which offered high bounties to
encourage enlistments, to attack the government for its handling of
the war of 1812 which he called a failure, its embargo rather than
prosecution of the war at sea, and the administration's calling the
opposition to its policies divisive, which makes it most apt today.
Small tear at stitching, else a very good+ copy, removed, mail fold,
leaves clean, and without any foxing. A nice copy. Shaw & Shoemaker
33618. Sabin 102259. Not in MU Daniel Webster Speeches Collection.

OF ALBANY. WEDNESDAY, MAY 28, 1851. (Albany): Gideon & Co., Printers,

conflict between North and South is much in evidence in this and the
following sections (a speech by John C. Spencer, which followed at a
dinner, and Webster's reply) covering slavery, the Fugitive Slave
Act, and the possibility of secession. Removed, lacking wrappers,
title page sunned at the spine, otherwise a very good copy with

senate, and looking across "to the seats on the other side." A very

11. Webster, Daniel. SPEECH OF MR. WEBSTER, IN THE SENATE, IN REPLY
TO MR. CALHOUN'S SPEECH, ON THE BILL "FURTHER TO PROVIDE FOR THE

1833. Washington, D. C.: Printed by Gales and Seaton, 1833. 48 pp.

Worcester" who is most likely Levi Lincoln (who was often referred to
by this title), Governor of Massachusetts from 1825 to 1833 and
elected Mayor of Worcester in 1848. The speech -also known as "The
Constitution not a Compact between Sovereign States-" was an
important one for Webster who supported the President in this matter.
Clay and Calhoun reached a compromise on the earlier bill but Webster
would have none of it with this speech (in which he supplemented and
re-enforced the argument of his Reply to Hayne) as he thought the
position both unsound economically and an unwise and dangerous
concession to the threats of the those supporting nullification. A
very good copy in original condition, three signatures bound in
string, but untrimmed and unopened, some browning to the edges and
wear to the upper corner Owner's name on front wrapper. Sabin

DELIVERED IN THE UNITED STATES SENATE, AUGUST 12, 1848. BOSTON: PRESS
OF T. R. MARVIN, 1848. 24 pp. 8vo. Stitched self wrappers. First
edition. Two anti-salvery speeches. In the first, Webster, a Whig,
comes out for Martin Van Buren running for President on the newly
founded, anti-slavery, Free Soil Party, declaring the three important
issues are: no new wars of aggression, no expansion of slavery, and
reform of finance. The second was on the Oregon Bill; first proposed
