Greetings Booklovers,
We are pleased to offer:
~
(No. 8888 ) Johnston, Joseph E[ggleston]. (1807-1891). NARRATIVE OF
MILITARY OPERATIONS, DIRECTED, DURING THE LATE WAR BETWEEN THE STATES, BY
JOSEPH E. JOHNSTON, GENERAL, C. S. A..
New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1874. First printing, 3/4 leather,
Octavo, 602 pages + vi ads, Black & white engraved plates, maps. Near Fine.
General Johnston's was one of the earliest memoirs of the war by a
senior Confederate commander. Strongly partisan and rather defensive in tone
with a heap of Johnston's anti-Davis sentiment thrown in for good measure.
Includes numerous portraits of Union and Confederate generals on
tissue-guarded engraved plates along with several maps, one of which folds
out. See DORNBUSCH Vol. III, #1399; EICHER #257; HOWES #J167; NEVINS et al,
Vol. II, p. 68. Bound in marbled paper over boards with leather spine and
corners, marbled endpapers and textblock edges. Spine is titled in gilt with
rules and ornaments stamped in black. Rubs along joints and at extremities,
paper on boards is also rubbed in spots, prior owner bookplate on front
pastedown. Front free endpaper and about the first 10 leaves have a short
tear at fore edge, otherwise binding is sound, hinges not cracked.
