MOUNTAINS: A HISTORY OF THE INDIAN WARS OF THE FAR WEST.
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1886. First printing, Full cloth, Octavo, x, 
784 pages, Black & white engraved plates, maps. Near fine.
      Accurate, well researched and account of such clashes as Sand Creek, 
Fort Phil Kearney, Mountain Meadow, Little Big Horn, the Lava Beds, and 
more. Much on the Pacific Northwest. Howes calls this "best single volume on 
the subject." Generously illustrated with engraved cuts, several full page 
plates, and two maps (one fold-out). HOWES #D575; GRAFF COLLECTION #1181. 
Bound in decorated green cloth over boards, brown endpapers, dark brown 
topstain. Upper board titled in gilt and black, illustrated in red, gilt, 
and black. Spine lettering is dulled. Small prior owner label dated 1886 at 
top fore corner of front pastedown. Binding shows some rubbing and shallow 
bumps to extremities but remains snug. Very nice copy.    $250.00
