DOUGLASS, Frederick. NARRATIVE OF THE LIFE OF FREDERICK  DOUGLASS,
AN  AMERICAN  SLAVE, WRITTEN BY HIMSELF. Boston:  Anti-Slavery  Office
1845.  First  Edition.  Original blindstamped black  cloth  with  gilt
lettering  on  the  front  cover.   Illustrated  with  a  frontispiece
portrait  of  Douglass.  xvi,  125 pages.  Preface  by  William  Lloyd
Garrison  and printing a letter by Wendell Phillips. Douglass's  first
book  and  the preeminent slave narrative of the 19th  century.  Early
owner  name on front endpaper; text very clean with virtually none  of
the  foxing  typical  for this title. Slight wear to the head  of  the
spine.  Near  Fine,  the  nicest  copy we have  seen  in  many  years.
