FEARING, Kenneth. NEW AND SELECTED POEMS in a fine custom binding by
Sangorski & Sutcliffe. Bloomington: Indiana University Press (1956).
First Edition. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front
endpaper in 1956 for collector Saul Shapiro, whose bookplate is on
the front endpaper. Mr. Shapiro collected signed Modern First
Editions with a Jewish connection (the author, a character, subject
matter, etc.) which he would have signed by the author and then
rebound by a variety of fine binders. This title has an exceptional
binding by the famous British bookbinding firm of Sangorski &
Sutcliffe. Laid into the book is the original 1957 receipt from the
binders describing the binding and the cost (75 sterling): "To
binding in finest style throughout, preserving complete wrapper at
end. Solid gilt edges, special double headbands. Bound in boards
covered in dark rifle green morocco with doublures of contrasting
maroon morocco, leather joints and marbled end leaves. Extra gilt
finish with polychrome inlays of leather in great variety of design
to suggest the bud and the flowering of poetic genius. (more than 100
separate inlays). Fitted with leather edged etui. An incredibly
beautiful binding with the same pattern on both front and rear
covers. Housed in a marbled paper slipcase with a burgundy morocco
piece at the opening. Fine in a superb custom binding. $2500.00
