Caesar, Caius Julius. I COMMENTARI... CON LE FIGURE IN RAME... FATTE DA
ANDREA PALLADIO... Venice: Girolamo Foglietta. 1598. 4to. (40),408pp. Plus 42
double-page copper engravings (including 2 maps), each with printed descriptions.
Cont. limp vellum. Some occasional text foxing. One leaf with a paper flaw
into the headline. Bookplate of Donald & Mary Hyde. Overall a lovely copy in its
original binding. $3,000.00 (trade discount allowed)
The second Palladio edition (the first is 1575) of the Italian translation of
Caesar’s COMMENTARIES made by Francesco Baldelli. Mortimer, in Italian 16th
Century Books at Harvard, notes that some of the copper plates were reworked
for this second edition of 1598. See the Fowler Architectural Collection #237
(the 1575 edition). Not in Adams and not in the BL Italian STC. In fact, the
1598 edition is a much rarer book than the 1575 edition.
