Greetings Booklovers,
We are pleased to offer:
~
(No. 9160 ) [Clarke, Asia Booth] (Foreword by Eleanor Farjeon). THE
UNLOCKED BOOK: A MEMOIR OF JOHN WILKES BOOTH BY HIS SISTER ASIA BOOTH CLARKE
(SIGNED BY FARJEON).
New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1938. First printing, Full cloth, Octavo, 205
pages, black & white photographic plates. Good in a fair dust jacket, Jacket
in Mylar protector.
Enlightening portrait of John Wilkes Booth written by the person who
probably knew and loved him best. While Edwin Booth and other family members
tried to blot all record of their brother from the family history after his
assassination of Lincoln, Asia secretly preserved her memories of him in
this journal which she wrote within the first ten years after his death.
Includes many essential details of Booth family life, previously unknown
Booth family letters, extracts from documents and letters given to Asia by
people who had known John Wilkes as a schoolboy and an actor, several
photographs, and more. Asia Booth Clarke willed her secret journal to
Eleanor Farjeon's father and it remained unpublished prior to this present
form. This copy is INSCRIBED and SIGNED by Farjeon to early film actor Leon
M. Lion (Hitchcock's "Number 17," etc.). MONAGHAN #3611. Bound in green
cloth over boards with spine and upper board lettered in gilt, red topstain.
There is rubbing to extremities, some fading from old dampness around heel
of spine and along bottom edges of boards. Slight lean to spine. Jacket has
a 3/4" brown stain at top edge of rear panel near joint fold, top 3/4" and
bottom 1/4" of spine is chipped away, there are chips and rubs at
extremities, moderate browning, and some tears along joint and fore edge
folds repaired from the back with archival tissue. $150.00
