[Wheeler, Henry M.] THE SLAVES' CHAMPION, or, A SKETCH OF THE LIFE,
DEEDS, AND HISTORICAL DAYS OF WILLIAM WILBERFORCE, WITH A PHOTOGRAPHIC
PORTRAIT. Written in commemoration of the centenary of his birthday.

London; Published For The Author: 1860. 2nd Edition.

The second edition of a book first published in 1859, a tribute to the
life and work of one of England's greatest and most influential
anti-slavery advocates. Wilberforce died in 1833, but his work continued,
and it is especially interesting that this title, commemorating the
hundredth anniversary of his birth in 1759, was published on the eve of
the American Civil War.

The first edition did not contain the photographic frontispiece -a
photograph of an etching of the great man. Not all the copies of this
edition had it either, as an advertisement at the rear indicates that this
edition was available with the print for 5s, 4d, or without the print for
a full shilling (not a small amount of pocket-change in those days) less.
Under the portrait print there is a second, smaller print illustrating his
signature.

Hardcover. 4.25"x6.5", 196 pages plus 4 pages of advertising at the rear;
albumen portrait frontispiece. Some light cover wear and soil, a little
rubbing to the spine lettering, but overall a very nice copy. $450.00
