"A theoretical and practical treatise on the fourth dimension"
consisting of a novella, a longish story, and two short stories, two of
which were first published in 1885. Charles H. Hinton (1853-1907) a
British author, was well-known for his speculations on the fourth
dimension (see Bulletin of the Philosophical Society of Washington, Vol
14, 1902). He married a daughter of logician George Boole, but was
forced to leave England after a bigamy conviction. He was, for a time,
an instructor of mathematics at Princeton, but after being fired, taught
at the University of Minnesota, later moving to Washington, DC, where he
served at the Naval Observatory and became a patent examiner. There he
died suddenly when asked to give a toast to "female philosophers" at a
Society of Philosophic Inquiry meeting.A man of no few talents, he also
invented a gun used in baseball batting practice (see www.ibiblio org).
