*MEADE, L. T. and Clifford Halifax, M.D. /A RACE WITH THE SUN/*/./ Bound
in original gilt decorated ribbed blue cloth. Illustrations by J.
Finnemore. Ward, Lock & Co., Limited, London, 1901. 1st edition. Small
8vo, pp. 307, ads.

L. T. Meade is the pseudonym of Mrs. Elizabeth Thomasina Meade Smith
(1854-1914). She was born in Ireland, the eldest daughter of a
Protestant minister. Her early interest in writing horrified her father,
as no lady in their family had previously undertaken work for wages (see
the Cornell University Library website for "Women in the Literary
Marketplace 1800-1900"). Between 1866 and her death, she published 280
titles, many of them for girls, as well as short stories and articles
for magazines, such as The Strand Magazine. She also wrote many crime
and mystery novels (31 in all), often with the assistance of a
scientific consultant such as Dr. Clifford Halifax, with whom she
collaborated on five titles (Hubin, pp. 281-282). In such cases, Bleiler
speculates that Halifax provided the idea and Smith did the writing
(Science Fiction: The Early Years, pp. 488-489). Her books for girls are
still collected and are relatively common. However, her mysteries are
seldom seen in their original state. . This title is actually a
collection of eight short stories, with a central character, Paul
Gilchrist, a man of science whose talents are put to work in each of
these tales. Our copy shows rubbing to the extremities. The cloth on the
rear board is wrinkled. There is some overall light soiling to the
boards; however the gilt design and lettering is bright and unchafed.
The binding is a bit sprung, but the endpapers are clean and tight, and
nothing is loose. A few spots of smudging to contents, but nothing
untoward. In all, a good copy. No dust jacket.
