[Rarebooks] Spanish musicians; signed programs

1)         Casals (Pau) = Pablo Casals. B. Vendrell, Terragona, 
1876.  Vioncellist, pianist, composer, conductor. He played for the 
Berkeley [Ca.] Musical Association, which sponsored a series of 
concerts (five a year). The association was organized in 1910 by the 
American baritone William Edwin Chamberlain and lasted through at 
least 1934.  Here is the program for the fourth concert of the 
fourteenth season, Wednesday, March 19, 1924, at Harmon Gymnasium on 
the University of California campus.  4pp.  Signed by Pablo Casals 
and by Harold Bauer, the British-born American virtuoso pianist 
Harold Bauer, who appeared on the same card.  19cm.

             Beethoven's Sonata in A major, Op 69 (Bauer & Casals)
             Hure Air   (Casals)
             Granados Danse Espagnole  (Casals)
             St.- Saens Allegro Appassionato (Casals)
             Schumann Papillons, Op. 2  (Bauer)

Mason and Hamlin piano. "Ladies will please remove their hats."

With the [unsigned] program for February 27, 1919, for which Casals 
appeared, with Will Garroway at the piano.   Of Casals it has been 
said: "The only string player admired by all musicians without 
reservation."   Fine.  $550.00




2)         The Aguilars / Spanish Lute Quartet.  Played for the 
Berkeley [Ca.] Musical Association, which sponsored a series of 
concerts (five a year). The association was organized in 1910 by the 
American baritone William Edwin Chamberlain and lasted through at 
least 1934.  Here is the program for the third concert of the 
twenty-first season, Thursday evening,  January 22, 1931, at Harmon 
Gymnasium on the University of California campus.  Broadside. 27.8 cm.

             Signed by Ezequiel, Pepe, Elisa and Paco Aguilar.  The 
music for the evening included Couperin and Mateo Albeniz, arranged 
by Joaquin Nin, Anais's father; Isaac Albeniz; Mozart; Halffter; 
Turina; de Falla; Nin.   Fine.  $200.00
