Naunton (1563-1635) was an English scholar, politician and diplomat.
Appointed to the commission to examine Sir Walter Raleigh, he was popularly reported
to have a large responsibility for Raleigh’s execution. This work, left
unpublished at the time of his death, is a valuable account of the chief courtiers of
Queen Elizabeth (though he endeavored, he tells us, to avoid all scandal
rather than “trample upon the graves of person at rest”). Wing N251.
