Lacroix, Paul. [Dufour, Pierre (pseud) and Jacob, P.L. (pseud)].
HISTOIRE DE LA PROSTITUTION CHEZ TOUS LES PEUPLES DU MONDE, DEPUIS
L'ANTIQUITE LA PLUS RECULEE JUSQU'A NOS JOURS PAR PIERRE DUFOUR [SIX
VOLUMES]. Paris: Sere, 1851-1853. Illus. with 19 (of 20) engraved
plates with tissue guards. 8vo. Green cloth, top edge gilt
(hardback). First edition. Querard 1014-15; Osler 6022; Vicaire IV,
837-8; Gay II, 511.

Paul Lacroix (1806-1884), best known under the pseudonym of P.L.
Jacob, wrote novels as well as works on history and culture,
including a history of Napoleon III, the life of Tsar Nicholas I, and
with Ferdinand Sere, the five-volume Le moyen age et la renaissance
(1847). According to Lorenz, Lacroix denied authorship of the work
and its later two volumes. The first two of the six volumes covers
prostitution in antiquity including the Egyptians, Greeks, Jews, and
Romans, while the last four encompass the middle ages through the
reign of Henry IV. Though not overly scholarly, the work is filled
with a wealth of interesting information. Spine ends worn, boards
rubbed, scattered foxing, two leaves partially sprung, but overall
still a good solid copy. [28277] $400.00
