*BRECKON, Fred*/*. IN THE HANDS OF THE HUN A Story of my four years
experience in a German Prison Camp. */ Card covers creased and soiled.
Spine ends pulled; else good condition. Illustration on front cover
shows a defenceless prioner being butt-ended by a nasty looking German
soldier. Published by the author. Fort Francis, ON. 1919.
1st edition, 8vo, pp. 92.
Frederick Ernest Breckon was living in Fort Francis, Ontario, and
working as a watchmaker, when World War One was declared, and he
immediately volunteered to join the Canadian army and serve overseas.
According to his Attestation Papers, he was 5 feet, 7 1/2 inches tall,
with a 36 inch chest (when fully expanded), a dark complexion, brown
eyes, and black hair. He declared his religious affiliation to be to the
Presbyterian cause. He was accepted into the Canadian Army on September
21, 1914, and after receiving basic training in Quebec, was sent
overseas, where he joined the Eighth Battalion of the Canadian
Expeditionary Force - the famed "Little Black Devils". After
participating in the vicious fighting at the Ypres Salient, he was
captured, and spent the next three years and eight months in various
German prisoner of war camps. This little book is his account of his
experiences at the hands of "the vicious Boche". Of the various private
accounts of enlisted men who served during the Great War, this is one of
the scarcest, being privately printed, and in a limited quantity. It is
referred to in Cooke's bibliography, "The Canadian Military Experience"
(p. 159), but copies rarely turn up for sale. WorldCat does not list any
institutional holdings of this title. Our copy comes with a two page,
legal-sized, photocopy of Breckon's Attestation Papers. Some of the
margins of the pages are a bit grubby, but the text is generally clean
and tight. Illustrated with interesting photos of prisoners.
Price: $175.00.
Terms of Sale - The price is net in USD, and the book is offered subject
to prior sale. Payment by check or credit card. Postage and packing
charge is $7.50. Returnable within seven days of receipt if not as
described.
